The explorer.exe is an executable file of Windows Explorer for Microsoft Windows Operating system. The explorer.exe file is executed when the user double-clicks on the My Computer desktop icon or the one found in the Start menu. Now the explore.exe file also serves as a task-based file management system now. |

This is the user shell, which we see as the familiar taskbar, desktop, and so on. This process isn't as vital to the running of Windows as you might expect, and can be stopped (and restarted) from Task Manager, usually with no negative side effects on the system. | |||

Yes, HOWEVER...If abruptly ended, more often then not I lose most of my taskbar icons that were in my system tray, usually the main program keeps running, but access to it via the tray icon it represents is lost, and not always does simply reloading the program bring the icon back some dont come back till other occurences occur to inhibit their return, such as rebooting windows... but usuall just a quick log-off and then reload windows is needed NOT USUALLY a full all out reboot of the macine... Windows Explorer should be located in the folder you installed Windows. If it is not it could be a virus, spyware, adware, trojan or worm! | |||

No worries if you shut this off accidentaly. Instead of restarting your PC to get your taskbar and icons back just simply activate Task Manager. From the file tab choose New Task (Run...)then type in "explorer.exe" (w/out the parentheses). Your desktop is now back and your ready to go agaim. | |||

i dont have the explorer.exe active and i tried to start it from the task bar and nothing happens? | |||

just the desktop GUI (graphic user interface) i usally turn it off while gaming ect. can be restarde in task manger new task>explorer.exe as with any part of an operating system this can be exploited and should be watched for changes in behavior. | |||
