CTHELPER is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. The theory is that 3rd party manufacturers can use the CTHELPER plug-in interface to produce drivers, add-on features, and fixes that will integrate with a tighter fit with Creative??s sound drivers and utilities. Given its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task. It also allows Creative speaker setup to be synchronized with Windows Control Panel speaker setting. Without it running that check box in Creative speaker setting is not functional (settings are not in sync). Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 100% of CPU time so it's best left disabled unless you need it

The synchronization with Windows Control Panel speaker setting makes me think this is best left alone by most users, it would be wrong to say it's Not required. About the malware comment. Marking Creatives legitimate software as bad based on it's name being used by malware is in my view bad practice. Unless at least some checksum, md5 or even exe path variation is going to be given to ID program files you can't even use the information for much and it ends up being FUD. Unexperienced PC users looking for process information will just get in truble deleting the wrong files. Personally i think the two types of information should be kept apart and never just left to the comments. Give it as extra information along with the rest of the process information but make it very clear (really sorry if this is seen as comment spam i just feel compelled to make this comment)

You only get this with SOME viruses. as you can with any process. it is a Creative labs process. end it you wish to kill off some Speaker control panals. NOT RECOMENDED FOR DISABLEING UNLESS YOU FNID OUT YOU HAVE THE WORM.

I have this from my soundcard EMU 1212m. It opens the patchmix dsp.

I have this for my Emu 0404, just wondering if I can disable it... I thought My Patchmixdsp would be handling tasks, not cthelper.

If you have a Creative soundcard and want it to better integrate with other system devices, especially Creative speaker systems, leave this enable. Otherwise, disable at will - it's certainly not obligatory, just helps you make the most of your expensive hardware!!

I'm trying to clean up my start up when I boot in the morning. I really don't understand all this stuff. Can I, or should I disable CTHELPER from activating upon start up? If I do, when does it activate after the first boot? Will it do it by itself, or must I do it manualy?
