Not needed at startup...probably, for most, not needed at all.

Allows Dell's website to communicate with system details of your machine.

Dell installed this to detect hardware. However, there is no need for it to be running in the background at all times. When uninstalled it stays in the sytem tray. VERY SUSPICOUS - spyware?

I agree that DellSystemDetect doesn't need to communicate every time the computer starts up. Or, maybe it takes that opportunity to check for SmartDrive error (and maybe others) on every boot up. At least you'll be informed almost immediately if it happens. I think that if you're still patronizing Dell, then pieces of the their hardware-monitoring and self-test-and-reporting programs are pretty useful. So I would consider eliminating them only after being certain that I've inventoried every function they provide and be certain that I won't miss any of them if I disabled / uninstalled them. Otherwise, they do serve to maintain the innards of your computer. Hey, if it wants to do a thorough check of my hard drive and ram every month, it's not so bad, although the computer runs like molasses for 5 minutes while that's going on. If there's still a systray icon after uninstalling DellSystemDetect, then there must be another component of the [MyDell] monitoring/reporting system still active. Spyware is used to steal your money; I don't think that's part of the function of MyDell.

If necessary, just delay it. Don't dissable it unless you've got a weekly service scheme where you check for updates for drivers, programs, Vrs and Malwr definitions etc. You installed it ones to keep your Dell PC/Laptop/Server drivers up-to-date.
