This comes with Canon PIXMA MX700 printers as part of Scansofts Omnipage software and is completely safe.

It's not exclusively for Canon printers. Omnipage has been around since before Canon even made printers I'm fairly certain. I have the program and my printer is a Brother. I do have a Canon camera, but I don't think that's where it came from

Thanx for the "constructive" posting Joe!! I simply went into the Omnipage> Tools> Options> General> remove check on Enable update detection.

Thanks Joe. Finally some workable suggestion. We need more people like you.

Wow - Para went about this the wrong way. Had me offered how to turn it off through its own menu, and not shouted, he might have sounded credible. Instead, the people calling him a baloney muncher sound credible.

Peter's comment is most pertinent to me. I have an old version of PaperPort bundled with my Brother printer. It was previously a ScanSoft product. When operating under Windows 7 (and I guess Vista), tighter security now prompts me every time I start on whether I wish to run this program. So there's now a nuisance factor that overtakes the question (for me) of memory usage. I don't know exactly what updates it queries for, but there's unlikely to be incremental updates for my obsolete version. So I'll just be disabling it, through Glary Utilities.
